The afternoon will commence with a site visit/tour of Hudson Civil Products, located 10min from Launceston city in Prospect. We will then convoy to Blackstone Heights just 5mins drive to see the TasWater pump station location, the event will conclude with social drinks and snacks at the Iron Horse Bar and Grill in Prospect.
Hudson Civil Products Facility Tasmanian-owned Hudson Civil Products is the pre-eminent supplier of civil plumbing and precast concrete products to the water and related industries in Tasmania. The Prospect HCP factory facility has in the last three years undergone substantial investment in more advanced machinery and manufacturing processes for precast and steel reinforcement products to support growth and innovation in the Tasmanian civil industry, including for supply to TasWater, irrigation, and other key Tasmanian industry sectors. This investment in automation and equipment works to drive new opportunities for industry and develop skills and manufacturing capacity to continue to build things in Tasmania, using local materials and products. A site tour of the factory and its contribution to the Civil industry in Tasmania is not to be missed.
TasWater Blackstone SPS project The Blackstone SPS project is unique for many reasons, due in part to the history of the site and reasons for the pump station upgrade following landslip activity and its proximity to Trevallyn Dam as a key part of Launceston’s water supply, as well as for the innovation and complexity in design of the project due to the difficult site and local conditions. Designed by local water experts IPD Consulting, and delivered by Tasmanian Contractor Shaw Contracting, the Blackstone pump station works had many challenges - as well as being one of the first projects delivered under the TasWater CDO model for capital delivery.
This project encompasses many of the challenges that the Tasmanian water industry faces – expensive and complicated infrastructure on difficult and constrained sites, hard decisions about costs and economies of scale, and how to deliver “best value” infrastructure that is fit for purpose whilst being mindful of the potential for gold-plating. A site tour that is sure to appeal to all water professionals.
