Join us for a webinar on Implementing Actions for Climate Resiliency at Water Resource Recovery Facilities on Wednesday 9th March 2022, hosted by the WA Branch. 

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) 6th Assessment Report was released in August 2021 with a stark message for us all to consider – this is a ‘Code Red for Humanity’. The release of this report has initiated a flurry of activity in the race towards net carbon zero.

Water utilities and the industry generally are now considering the benefits of unlocking a circular economy to not only better manage precious resources but to produce energy, to assist in cutting emissions through the value chain and progress towards our Net Carbon Zero Target.

At last year’s WA Water breakfast, we heard from some of industry leaders on their plans for implementing change towards Net Carbon Zero. In this webinar, we will turn our focus towards circular practices at Water Resource Recovery Facilities (WRRF). We will look both locally and around the globe where WRRFs are not only building better resiliency but assisting in lowering the production of harmful emissions.

Our presentation will be opened by WSAA’s Elliot Stuart who will be discussing their recently released paper called ‘Towards Resilience – Climate Change and the Urban Water Industry’. The paper illustrates how the urban water industry is impacted now by climate change and extreme events, our role in emissions generation, and how we are responding and becoming more resilient.

Our Webinar will then continue with a spotlight on WAs largest Water Resource Recovery Facility at Woodman Point. Hear from Scott McPhee from Water Corporation who will present on the existing plant and some of the circular processes already incorporated, provide an insight into the next imminent sludge upgrade which is incorporating THP technology to increase biosolids production and improve energy recovery; and Luc Kox from Hazer Group will provide an insight into some of the potential future plans such as hydrogen production and advanced water recycling.

Dr Fabiana Tessele, of Tessele Consultants will then provide a snapshot of her recent work within the Great Southern Region in the co-digestion space which would divert organic waste from landfill with a view to harnessing recycled gas and water from this organic waste and propel the industry in this region towards a Net Carbon Zero future.

Closing out the presentation will be Jacobs’ Global Technology Leader for Wastewater, Tim Constantine (live from Canada). Tim will provide some insight into Jacobs/VCS partnership and the Ejby Mølle ‘Beyond Energy Neutrality’ Program which improved resiliency and sustainability in the region of Odense in Denmark turning the Ejby Mølle WRRF from a large electrical power consumer to a net producer of electricity and heat energy with minimal capital over a very short time period.
