Goulburn-Murray Water (GMW) is set to begin preliminary inspections and investigations for the construction of fishways at the Koondrook and Cohuna Weirs along Gunbower Creek. These fishways will facilitate the movement of native fish upstream and downstream, connecting the stretch of Gunbower Creek between Koondrook Weir and the National Channel Inlet Regulator. The project is a collaboration involving GMW, the North Central Catchment Management Authority, the Department of Land, Water and Planning, and the Victorian Environmental Water Holder. The fishways' innovative design aims to benefit a diverse range of fish species, including the endangered Murray cod. The work is scheduled to take place from February to October 2021, mainly during the irrigation season shutdown, and efforts will be made to minimize the local community's aesthetic impact. These fishways are expected to boost local wildlife and support nature-based tourism.
