The Young Water Professionals of the AWA's SA Branch are excited to invite you to the first of the 2023 SA Sundowner Series, for after-work drinks, an interesting guest speaker and informal networking and discussion held on Thursday 16th February 2023 from 5:15pm to 6:30pm.

The SA AWA YWP aims to empower emerging leaders to build water industry networks, grow their knowledge and sharpen their leadership skills in both formal and informal settings.  Join us for regular after-work Sundowner drinks and informal networking hosted every other month by the AWA SA Young Water Professionals. Special guest speakers will be featured throughout the series to explore a wide range of topics through a short presentation and discussion. These events are open to anyone with an interest in the water industry and present an opportunity to meet and catch up with other professionals.

This is a free event where you can grab your drink(s) of choice, however, please register your attendance.

Guest Speaker: Dr. Lisa Blinco - Senior Water Systems Engineer, SA Water

Topic – Water and Energy

Water and energy supply are intrinsically linked; energy is required to move and treat water, and water is required to produce some types of electricity. SA Water has participated in the National Electricity Market – an electricity grid and market spanning from Cairns to Tasmania, to Port Lincoln – for the last ten years. With electricity prices changing every 5 minutes and ranging from -$1,000/MWh, to over $15,000/MWh, managing the risk of operating within this market is a big task. Lisa will talk about the different strategies used by SA Water to manage this risk including optimising the operation of major pump stations and building their energy generation and storage portfolio. Come and learn about the relationship between water and energy for water systems operation!

Bio

Dr Lisa Blinco is a Senior Water Systems Engineer at SA Water, working closely with the 24/7 Operations Control Centre to operate our water supply systems efficiently. She studied Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Adelaide, completing her bachelor’s degree in 2012 and her PhD in 2017. In her current role in SA Water, she uses a specially designed optimisation tool to plan the operation of South Australia’s bulk supply network including major pumped pipelines from the River Murray, reservoirs in the Mt Lofty Ranges, the Adelaide Desalination Plant, and major water treatment plants for the Adelaide Metropolitan region. She has also spent time in SA Water’s Energy Management team helping to manage the risk of operating directly within the National Electricity Market.
