The Young Water Professionals of the SA AWA Branch, along with our sponsor GPA, are excited to invite you to their first ever Sunriser event! The Sunriser event runs the same as a Sundowner event but in the morning, providing a chance for networking and informal knowledge sharing, with complimentary breakfast nibbles provided, and it’s still free! Register below to join us at the SA Water Learning Centre on Thursday the 27th of February from 8am to 9:15am to hear the presentation from Dr. Florence Choo and Peter Hobson from SA Water.
Topic – Source Water Management Research
In this session, Florence and Peter will outline the research project that explores the unexpected source of taste and odour (T&O) problems at Hope Valley Reservoir, which were found to be caused by benthic cyanobacteria. The proliferation of these cyanobacteria had led to a costly year-long campaign using powdered activated carbon at the water treatment plant to control these T&O
The project aimed to understand T&O events over the past twenty years at Hope Valley Reservoir, identify areas producing these tastes and odours, and assess the environmental impacts on both benthic (bottom-dwelling) and pelagic (open water) cyanobacteria. By combining water quality analysis, algal characterization, fluorescence, metagenomics, and hydrology, the research provided comprehensive insights. events.
This study has helped SA Water understand how benthic cyanobacteria affect our reservoirs and water treatment plant performance. The project’s thorough approach has created a strong framework for managing cyanobacterial blooms in a changing climate, benefiting water management practices in South Australia and beyond.
Speakers:
Dr. Florence Choo
Florence Choo is currently a senior scientist in the Water Science/ Water Expertise team at SA Water. She completed her PhD on detecting harmful algal blooms in real time using fluorescence. Since completing her PhD, she has worked on algal, water treatment and circular economy related research projects and investigations in her role at SA Water.
Peter Hobson
Peter Hobson is a senior scientist at SA Water with over 25 years’ experience. He has worked on operational activities and research projects with specific interest in ecology of cyanobacteria and bloom management, alternative algal control options and cyanobacteria monitoring and modelling
