Virtual Panel - Implications of the PFAS NEMP on Queensland Water Utilities

PFAS have had a significant impact on Queensland Water Utilities, driving decisions around biosolids management and questioning viability of recycled water schemes. Join us for a virtual panel discussion to hear the perspectives of water utilities and researchers with expertise in biosolids and emerging contaminants.

The PFAS National Environmental Management Plan (NEMP) was endorsed by all of Australia’s Environment Ministers and provides nationally agreed guidance on the management of PFAS contamination in the environment, including prevention of the spread of contamination. The environmental management of the group of manufactured chemicals known as PFAS (per-and poly- fluoroalkyl substances) is a high priority for environmental regulators around Australia. This reflects the widespread presence of PFAS in the environment, its unusual chemical properties, the uncertainties associated with its potential risks, and the resulting need for a precautionary approach to protect the environment and human health.

The third iteration of the NEMP, known as the ‘PFAS NEMP 3.0’, is scheduled to be released for consultation in July 2022. The AWA Queensland Branch Committee, with support from the qldwater Consortium for Research and Advocacy on Contaminants (qCRAC) will host an expert panel to discuss the implication that the PFAS NEMP 3.0 is likely to have on Queensland Water Utilities. The panel will include representatives from Water Utilities in South East Queensland and Regional Queensland along with University Researchers and a robust conversation around the implications the current PFAS NEMP 2.0 is already having on the water industry and the goals for a circular economy.

qldwater members are invited to register for this online technical event at the AWA member rate. Organisations may wish to purchase a 'boardroom pass' for multiple participants from their organisation.
