The water industry has primarily managed its cyber risks around SCADA operating systems and has been relatively fortunate compared to overseas utilities. As water utilities become more digitally connected and merge legacy and cloud enabled IT infrastructure services, the industry needs to manage critical infrastructure risks, third party suppliers, as well as detect and respond to cyber incidents and events related to critical infrastructure.
This events will feature a hypothetical Cyber Security Incident Response, with NSW Water Industry Leaders leading participants through a typical business crisis / incident management framework. It will follow the principles of Identification, Containment, Repair, Restore and Review.
The outcome will help attendees identify incident learnings that are more nuanced to the water industry and provide insights and real lessons learnt from similar cyber incidents. It will also form a White Paper for the NSW Water Sector.

Having worked on some of Australia’s key nation building and critical infrastructure programs, he is well versed in building cyber security from top to bottom (i.e. governance oversight and regulatory, through to engineering, architecture and assurance of delivery and ongoing managed services). |

Annette is a highly experienced certified lead auditor and award-winning risk manager in the water, environment, policy and mining fields. Annette has been recognised multiple times over by the industry and her peers, most recently winning the prestigious Australian Water Association’s Water Professional of the Year Award in 2021. Globally, Annette has guided many organisations in their development and implementation of water safety and risk management plans. In May 2024, she was invited to talk on this work at an International Water Association global webinar on Water Safety Plans. She has a multitude of journal papers, book chapters, books, technical papers, reports and other publications in several fields including bioremediation, biodiversity, microbial ecology, water utility due diligence and risk management. |

Dr Qiang Tang Senior Lecturer in the School of Computer Science of The University of Sydney

Dr. Qiang Tang is currently a senior lecturer in the School of Computer Science of The University of Sydney. From 2016-2020, he was an assistant professor at New Jersey Institute of Tech and Director of JD-NJIT-ISCAS Joint Blockchain research lab. Before joining NJIT, he did his postdoc at Cornell University. Dr. Tang's research span broadly of cybersecurity, particularly on blockchain, applied cryptography, privacy and security (including secure storage as a service). He is the program chair of annual public key crypto conference, 2024. He has won several prestigious awards including Sydney Research Accelerator Prize, MIT Technical Review 35 Innovators Under 35, Google Faculty Award, and several others, and research awards from world leading blockchain foundations such as Ethereum, Stellar, Filecoin and more. |
