Winners announced at the 2023 TAS Galah Dinner & Awards

The best and brightest of Tasmania's water sector gathered at AURA Hobart to celebrate the finalists and winner for the 2023 Tasmanian Water Awards during the TAS Galah Dinner and Awards held on 23 November.

The TAS Water Awards recognise the contribution of the Association's members for their inspiring leadership and innovative research, programs and infrastructure projects. 

 

AWA CEO Corinne Cheeseman congratulated all the finalists and winners for their hard work and outstanding achievements. 


“AWA’s Water Awards recognise the important and groundbreaking work our members do for the water sector and for their communities,” Cheeseman said.   


“The TAS Water Award finalists and winners showcase the best examples of innovation and reflect our members' collective contribution towards our sustainable water future.   

“From Supporting sewer master planning across Tasmania with Automated Geospatial Analysis to empowering young people and turning infrastructure into iconic landmarks, the people and projects we are celebrating demonstrate the excellent work being done across Tasmania.”

  

This year's TAS Water Award winners, will represent the state in the national Australian Water Awards, which will be presented at the Association's annual water conference and exhibition, Ozwater'24, in Melbourne.

TasWater Asset Painting Program - Connecting Communities Through Art - TasWater

TasWater's Asset Painting Program is a success story of how art can increase community pride, empower young people and turn utilitarian infrastructure into iconic landmarks, leaving a lasting impact on communities.
 

 


Infrastructure Project Innovation Award (Regional) (Sponsored by SMEC): 
 

Recycled Water Land Suitability Assessment Tool – Supporting Sewer Master Planning Across Tasmania with Automated Geospatial Analysis - the TasWater Alliance (TasWater, CPB Contractors Limited, UGL and WSP)

The geospatial tool provides a preliminary understanding of land suitability for irrigating recycled water within a 20km proximity of every sewerage treatment plant across the state. This tool uses multiple criteria based, on EPA and local council guidelines, to identify areas of potential reuse opportunities.

Isaac Probert, Graduate Water Resource Engineer - Pinion Advisory

Isaac has a degree in civil engineering, obtained from the UTAS. Isaac enjoys working with both government and private clients to solve their water related problems. Isaac’s primary role has been as project engineer on the Southern Midlands Irrigation Scheme, doing feasibility design. This has included hydraulic modelling, GIS and cost estimation. He has also been involved in other recycled and potable water projects, developing skills in Civil 3D, GIS, pipeline design, and hydraulic modelling. In 2022, he conducted rapid impact assessments in the North after the October floods evaluating damage in the Lake River/Poatina area.

 


Water Professional of the Year: 


Anthony Allan, Operational Improvement Lead at TasWater

Anthony is a highly experienced and driven Process Engineer at TasWater, with a passion for the water industry. He is a trusted and respected technical expert and an exceptional leader with a remarkable ability to identify and nurture talent. Anthony demonstrates a commitment to outreach and advocacy through his dedicated efforts to raise awareness and engage with the community and future professionals. Following the completion of the Blackmans Bay Sewage Treatment Plant upgrade, Anthony presented to Tasmania's Young Water Professionals group, providing insights into the project's various facets. 

 

He has also built a strong and valuable collaborative relationship with the University of Tasmania (UTAS) and its engineering and science students, working to nurture the next generation of water industry leaders. Through these actions, Anthony not only raises awareness about critical water-related issues but also inspires the next generation of water industry professionals and fosters a sense of responsibility for sustainable water practices within the community.
