Water Aid - Walk for Water
Globally, 10% of people lack access to clean water close to their home and as a result must travel to collect their water. Of those 10% of water collectors, eight out of ten are women, who must for collect water for multiple hours per day thereby reducing their capacity to attend school which has the flow on effect of reducing education within these communities. On average the return journey for water collectors is 6km long but can significantly vary and can be more than 12km in some cases.
Water Aid are on the mission to provide safe water, sanitation, and hygiene to the poorest and most marginalised people across the globe. Their Walk for Water event is one of their key annual fundraisers that contributes to some of the most important projects including constructing pipelines and treatment systems. For the five days, starting October 2nd to October 6th, you are encouraged to set a distance and fundraising goal to walk, run, ride or any other form of human transport to your target distance. This is a great way to get active and help better the lives of many.
