The AWA QLD Gala Dinner 2024 - Celebrating Success with a Supportive Community

This year, the Australian Water Association's Queensland Gala Dinner was held at the iconic Brisbane City Hall, a historic landmark that stands as a testament to community and culture. The grandeur of the venue perfectly set the tone for an evening dedicated to celebrating success within the water industry. The atmosphere was vibrant, filled with professionals, leaders, and emerging leaders united by a shared commitment to innovation and sustainability in water management.
As a subcommittee member of AWA, attending the Gala Dinner was a truly inspiring experience. One of the most memorable moments for me was hearing the story of Cameron Jackson, Futures Specialist in Environment Water Quality at Urban Utilities. With 34 years of dedicated service, Cameron has made a lasting impact through his work in environmental science and biodiversity conservation, grounded in science-based decision-making. His story was a powerful reminder of the deeper purpose of working in water - a career not just about technical expertise but about creating a sustainable future for our environment and communities.
The night also recognised remarkable contributions to the water sector through several prestigious awards. These included the Organisational Excellence Award, presented to the Queensland Water Directorate and contributing organisations for their work through the Qldwater Consortium. The R&D Excellence Award went to Gympie Regional Council for their innovative EarthTec trial at Kinbombi Weir, which achieved a 99% reduction in blue-green algae blooms. The Infrastructure Project Innovation Award (Regional) was awarded to Sunwater for their Coolmunda Dam Variable Counterweight Project, and the Infrastructure Project Innovation Award (Metro) to Unitywater for their restoration of 2.4 km of the Caboolture River.
Individual excellence was highlighted with the Student Water Prize, awarded to Sophie Barrett of the University of Queensland for her research on the impacts of urban densification and climate change on urban water balance. The Young Water Professional of the Year was presented to Lindsay Stafford of AECOM for her leadership in water infrastructure and her commitment to community-focused solutions.
Finally, I would like to express my heartfelt thanks to Justin Simonis, Director of Promethean Projects, for his generous invitation to the YWP.
