The AWA Board elected our next President, Kevin Werksman, during the Connected by Water Conference in Perth. Kevin will take the position at the conclusion of Ozwater'25 in May next year, taking over from the current President, Peter Dennis. Peter has one year left in his term as President.
"I am pleased to announce Kevin's appointment as the next AWA President on behalf of the Board," Peter said.
"Kevin has a diverse skill set with a plethora of managing exciting, innovative projects in his career which will be valuable in the role of President following Ozwater'25."
Bringing over 20 years’ experience in strategic, commercial, economic and leadership, Kevin has been involved in the delivery of over 100 high-profile infrastructure projects, with a key specialisation in the water sector. During this time, Kevin has advised Sydney Water, WaterCare, Yarra Valley Water, WaterNSW, SA Water, Urban Utilities, Icon Water and Commonwealth Government Water entities on redesigning their operating models, as well as transforming their business strategies for infrastructure investment, divestment and growth.
"I'm humbled by the announcement, especially given the president's footsteps that I follow. I've been privileged to work with board members who have a passion for a water future. I'm also very excited to continue the excellent work that has paved the way for me."
"I'm most looking forward to creating great work with the AWA board, I wear my heart on my sleeve and I enjoy being a leader who can drive growth and change. Listening and taking feedback from all our Members into account will propel the board to exceed expectations."
"The highlights of my career have been around making a real impact to a sustainable water future. I'm proud of the roles I've played in responding to drought, desalination, the Murray-Darling basin plan, liveable cities, efficiency and more."
"Don't be afraid to dream big, the most powerful dreams are the ones you bring to life with others. If we want to create a true legacy, we need to embrace our young professionals and look to them for knowledge sharing. We need to create space in our organisation for the youth of today and embrace their skills."
As President Elect, Kevin will fulfil the role of Vice President. AWA’s Constitution allows for the President to be supported by the Immediate Past President in the first year of their two year term, and then the President Elect in the final year of their term. This allows for continuity as the leadership of the Board changes.
