My Water Journey

My name is Purvi Midwinter, and I have been actively involved in the water industry for the past five years. My journey began at Thermo Fisher Scientific, where I spent four years selling analytical instrumentation to a diverse range of customers. These included field staff, wastewater treatment plant operators, and commercial laboratories, all of whom relied on our equipment to monitor water quality effectively.

A year ago, I transitioned to Xylem, where my role has significantly expanded. As a Strategic Business Development Manager, I now focus on supporting long term projects that enhance water security and operational efficiency. This position allows me to work on innovative solutions that address critical challenges in the water sector, ensuring sustainable and efficient water management practices.

Joys of working in the water industry

Growing up in Africa, I was acutely aware of the scarcity of water and the profound impact it has on communities. This early exposure instilled in me a deep appreciation for the importance of access to clean water, which has become a driving force in my career.

One of the greatest joys of working in the water industry is the opportunity to solve complex challenges for customers. Whether it’s helping a wastewater treatment plant optimize its processes or providing analytical tools to field staff, each solution we deliver makes a tangible difference in ensuring water quality and availability. Another rewarding aspect is the collaborative nature of the industry. I enjoy bringing people together—be it colleagues, clients, or industry partners—to discuss and develop innovative solutions for improving water security. These collaborative efforts are not just about addressing immediate needs but also about creating sustainable practices that will benefit future generations.

Moreover, the water industry offers a unique blend of technical and strategic work. From developing cutting-edge technologies to implementing strategic plans that enhance operational efficiency, every day presents new opportunities to learn and grow. This dynamic environment keeps me engaged and motivated, knowing that my work contributes to a greater cause.

Lastly, there’s immense satisfaction in advocacy and education. Promoting awareness about water sustainability and educating others on the importance of efficient water management is incredibly fulfilling. It’s a privilege to be part of an industry that plays such a crucial role in the well-being of communities and the environment.

10 years from now….

In ten years, I see myself as a leading expert in the water industry, deeply knowledgeable about the latest technologies and innovations. My goal is to not only master these advancements but also to educate and inspire others within the industry. I aim to be at the forefront of technological developments, ensuring that I can provide first-hand insights and guidance.

I am passionate about advocating for the importance of the water industry. I plan to actively participate in career events at universities, offer educational opportunities in schools, and mentor aspiring professionals. By sharing my experiences and knowledge, I hope to encourage more people to join this vital field.

The work I do today is driven by a desire to make a lasting impact on future generations. I want to ensure the availability of clean water and promote the importance of protecting our planet. My efforts are focused on creating sustainable solutions that will benefit both current and future communities.

Ultimately, I aspire to leave a lasting impression on younger generations, inspiring them to follow in my footsteps. By fostering a sense of responsibility and passion for water management, I hope to contribute to a future where water security and environmental stewardship are paramount.

What lead you to here?

I did a PhD in the Chemistry of toothpaste at the University of Bath, UK. During my PhD, I developed flavored antibacterial agents for toothpaste formulations. I worked with a copper-based compound and incorporated flavours like menthol and vanilla into its structure to enhance both its effectiveness and user experience.

My Water Journey

My journey in water started in Rockhampton following significant local flood event in 2011.  I was originally interested in stormwater and floodplain management however was exposed to challenging water and wastewater infrastructure projects, primarily resolving residents service issues in existing suburbs that sparked an interest in helping the community. That evolved into planning essential services for urban growth areas, which are now thriving.

Joys of working in the water industry

To me it is the people - everyone is passionate about supporting our communities and providing better outcomes for the environment. The industry itself is collaborative and diverse, where we support and recognise success and innovation. It also provides the opportunity to continuously learn and grow.

10 years from now….

We’re facing some significant challenges in both our climate and growing population; the water industry is at the forefront of trying get a better outcome for our society. Ten years is a long time – but I see myself deeply involved in community focused projects, that promote sustainable and integrated water management. My goal is to support elevating the visibility of the water industry and the good work we are all doing to leverage community support. I also would like to enable the next generations of water professionals by sharing experience and fostering a culture of rethinking, continuous learning and collaboration.

What lead you to here?

Growing up, my family moved around Australia quite a bit due to my father’s job. This gave me the unique opportunity to experience life in rural Western Australia and Queensland. We spent weekends bush walking through Wellington National Park, from that I gained an appreciation for the diverse landscapes and environments we have here in Australia.
