GMW wraps up Winter Works program
With the new irrigation season under way, Goulburn-Murray Water has brought its 2023
Winter Works program to a close.
The program occurs over the three-month irrigation off-season, allowing GMW to dewater channels and undertake various maintenance and capital works projects.
GMW Infrastructure Delivery Services general manager Warren Jose said the 2023 Winter Works program had been highly productive.
“It’s been a fantastic effort from everyone involved,” he said.
“During the program, we have had about 60 GMW staff and 40 contractors out in the field on
any given day.
“Despite the often challenging weather, they have understood the importance of the works
and completed a significant amount in just three short months.”
These works included:
- replacing 39 regulators
- treating 260km of channel for aquatic weeds
- desilting 26km of channels
- major refurbishment of 31km of channel
- replacing or repairing 11 structures (ie. bridges and culverts)
- remodelling 10 channels.
The works were completed ahead of the start of the 2023/24 irrigation season on Tuesday 15
August allowing time for the Water Planning team to refill channels before customers begin
placing orders.
“We know there are a lot of customers who have to plan around the irrigation off-season to
ensure they still have access to water when channels are drained,” Mr Jose said.
“We are grateful for their flexibility and understanding during this time, as it has helped us
improve the delivery system in ways that will benefit customers for years to come.”
