Does Australia have the best water in the world on tap?
TasWater is vying for the title of Best Water in the World after shipping out a sample from its Barrington water treatment plant.
Eleven litres of the tap water is on its way to the Berkeley Springs International Water Tasting Competition in West Virginia, US.
After taking out the Water Industry Operators Association of Australia’s (WIOA) Best Tap Water competition, TasWater CEO Michael Brewster said it was a great honour to represent Australia on the world stage.
“It recognises not only our staff at Barrington but all TasWater staff contributing to providing drinking water across the state,” he said.
“TasWater aims to supply quality water to all our customers, wherever they are.
“We acknowledge, however, that in celebrating the recognition this completion will bring TasWater and the team at Barrington, we still have work to do to provide the similar level of quality to all our customers.”
Nine judges – ranging from a sommelier to a food critic and water industry specialist – will rate the water on its appearance, odour, flavour, mouthfeel and aftertaste.
The winner of last year's WIOA Best Tap Water honours, Goulburn Valley Water's Marysville Water Treatment Plant, is the only other Australian entrant in the municipal category.
Frequency H2O LOVE (Majors Creek, Queensland) and Oro Luxury Water (Waterloo, NSW) are representing Australia in the bottled non-carbonated and carbonated categories, respectively.
