New digital metering technology is being trialled in select townships across Goulburn Valley Water’s (GVW) service area as part of a multimillion-dollar project to help reduce water wastage in the region.
The project will enable real-time water usage information, more accurate meter reads, the ability to identify cost savings and network efficiencies, as well as early leak detection.
Around 11,700 mechanical water meters will be upgraded as part of a staged rollout, with installation of new technology already underway in Wandong, Heathcote Junction and Mansfield, and Broadford installations next in line.
GVW Managing Director Steve Capewell said sub-contractor New Plumbing Solutions (NPS) will be installing the new meters in Broadford and that customers can expect to see NPS representatives in the area in coming weeks.
“Customers receiving the meters may already have been contacted by GVW via a letter — and if we have their mobile number we will also text them in the lead up to NPS attending their property,” Capewell said.
“NPS representatives will also be door knocking in a COVID-safe way to advise customers that they are on-site, and if the customer is not at home a notification will be left in their mailbox to let them know that the exchange has occurred.”
While customers are offered an opportunity to opt out of the trial and retain their mechanical meter if they wish, Capewell said the new metering technology will provide users with free and detailed information regarding their water use.
“We are so pleased to have this installation phase underway and look forward to the day we can activate the data portal for customers to have access to their water-use data,” he said.
“This will enable them to analyse and track their water use in real time — one of the many benefits this technology provides.”
Results from the trial will help GVW determine further commitments to installing meters throughout the rest of its service area.
