WA Water Corporation and NPE deliver successful wastewater bypass project

WA Water Corporation has successfully set up a demanding 100 per cent bypass at its Beenyup wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) without disrupting day-to-day operations.

Australian pump and power rental equipment supplier, National Pump & Energy (NPE), helped with the design and build of this wastewater bypass system.

The bypass project consisted of 23 diesel driven rental pumpsets, which were supplied and installed by NPE.

According to NPE, Water Corporation required the system at its Beenyup wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) to bypass 100 per cent of the WWTP’s inflow to the primary effluent distribution chamber to enable contractors to carry out essential works in dry conditions.

As such, NPE designed, installed, remote monitored and operated the system, which pumped 2.63GL of wastewater in 23 days.

NPE Account Manager Jeremy Collins said pumping at nearly 4000L a second in itself is a big task without the added requirement from WA Water Corporation to maintain the primary settlement tank level within a 40mm range to ensure the tanks operated correctly to avoid upsetting the chemical and biological balancing of the WWTP.

Aided by NPE’s advanced electronic system and telemetry monitoring capabilities, Collins claimed the stringent prerequisite was met successfully without disruption to the day-to-day operations of the facility.

Collins said this project is significant for the company and the industry as a whole.

“A bypass of this volume with such small tolerances is not easy at all and takes a lot of planning and experience in this arena to complete successfully,” he said.

“This project had a real risk to construction personnel lives due to the below-ground confined nature of the works, as well as the challenges from pumping solids and bacteria-laden wastewater.”

Collins also said that the company looks forward to taking its offer further to other bypass projects.
