South Gippsland Water will begin $1 million worth of upgrade works at the treated water storage basins at Toora and Fish Creek to ensure safe and clean drinking water for rural communities.
The Toora and Fish Creek basins each hold one million litres of water and are a key component of potable water provision for the region's townships' South Gippsland Water service.
The basins store water after it has been treated, providing system capacity and ensuring a reliable supply of water.
The works will include installation of new liners and floating covers on both basins. The liners will fully seal the basins, with the floating covers ensuring treated water remains in pristine condition for customers.
South Gippsland Water Managing Director Philippe du Plessis said the Toora and Fish Creek liners are the beginning of further upgrade works planned by the utility.
“The liners at Toora and Fish Creek, are the first of six being replaced as part of the Price, Services, Future Plan which provides a $3.3 million investment to new liners and high quality water for our customers across the region,” he said.
GEM Industrial from Leongatha is set to complete the civil and site works, with Geotest from South Australia set to complete the manufacture and installation works of the liner and cover replacements.
During the works, both basins will be emptied and taken offline. Works are expected to take three months to complete.
