Yarra Valley Water is now the proud owner of Australia’s largest sewage storage facility.
The $69 million Craigieburn Sewage Transfer Hub project will improve the utility’s capacity to collect, store and transfer sewage flows from future developments in Melbourne’s northern suburbs.
It was built next to the existing Craigieburn Sewage Treatment Plant and is made up of two 15 ML glass-coated steel tanks, which are the largest of their kind in the southern hemisphere.
More tanks with a total capacity of 210 ML will be added as the population of the area continues to grow, servicing up to 420,000 people.
Yarra Valley Water Managing Director Pat McCafferty said this innovative approach would help the utility keep up with demand in one of Australia’s fastest growing regions.
“The Hub is an adaptive piece of infrastructure that will expand with development in the area,” McCafferty said.
More tanks will be added as the population of the area continues to grow.
“It’s also a much more cost effective solution than building a large sewer at twice the cost.
“Building flexible infrastructure, which can grow with the community, allows us to invest money where it’s needed most, while still ensuring we’re able to service the community for years to come.”
McCafferty said it is just one example of the critical infrastructure Yarra Valley Water is delivering for the region.
“It wasn’t long ago that there was virtually no existing water and sewerage infrastructure in Melbourne’s outer north,” he said.
“It’s staggering to think how far the area has come and how much further it will go in the next few years.”
The project took about two and a half years to complete and was carried out by CPB Contractors.
