Date Tuesday, 16 November 2021
Time 6:00pm - 9:00pm AEDT
Venue The Commons
Address L1, 3 Albert Coates Lane, Melbourne

How exciting to once again be able to host a face to face tech event! We will be adhering to current CovidSafe event guidelines of 4 square meters per person and as a result we will only have room for 50 attendees so don't wait too long to register!

We are most fortunate to have an expert panel of water leaders to discuss all digital water metering aspects and answer any questions you may have:

Lara Olsen, Managing Director, South East Water
Mark Williams, Managing Director, GWMWater
Chris Andrews, Principal, Asset Management and Performance, Aurecon
Glenn Wilson, General Manager Service Futures, Yarra Valley Water

15 years ago Victoria started to roll out electricity digital (smart) meters which have enabled decentralised power generation from solar panels with feed in and feed out tariffs, enabled green power and reduced reliance on big dirty base load coal power stations power stations and have provided real time distributed data which has enabled the electricity operate in real time and work the existing network harder. The meters have also allowed customers to understand their demand patterns and identify power wastage. Customers are offered supply packages which are tailored to them that reduce cost and provide incentives for reducing expensive peak power demand, and the connection of electric cars to the grid can through the meters become distributed storage for the electricity system further reducing peaks and storing intermittent green power.

The water industry is proposing to roll out digital meters to customers on a larger scale now too over the next few years.

Our industry faces significant challenges to maintain secure and reliable service provision in the context of climate change, ageing infrastructure, urban growth, irrigation demand and with investment capacity constrained by customer affordability. Traditional urban water, sewer and drainage networks are essentially separate ‘dumb networks’, to operate in a preset mode, requiring manual intervention to change the mode of operation. Networks are also typically lazy civil assets designed for the extreme worst-case events and 99.9% of the time the capacity is under-utilised.

Do they have a similar potential to electricity to make water networks more intelligent in operation and enhance the network efficiency, manage risk of network integration, to cater for decentralised systems, to drive water networks to work harder and perform better - and to do so whilst continuing to provide a safe and reliable service to our community? Are digital meters an opportunity to transform ‘dumb’ separate networks into ‘Intelligent Networks’ to cater for the more complex integrated networks required for Cities of the Future?

During our presentations and panel discussion we will discuss experiences in the delivery of digital metering, emerging metering technology and the opportunity of digital metering to deliver customer value.

Following short presentations and a panel Q&A discussion, there will be time for networking and refreshments.

Please note you will need to be double vaccinated and show your Covid-19 Certificate at the venue for in-person attendance.
