Bios

Matthew Bowman 

Matthew is the Operations Support Manager - Drinking Water Quality Branch, Water Corporation of Western Australia. He has been with the Water Corporation since 1997 commencing as a graduate engineer. Matthew has worked in a variety of office and operations-based wastewater and water roles, both metropolitan and regional. Matthew also has a Certificate IV in Workplace Training and Assessment and has spent time delivering the Water Corporation's wastewater and water competency based training courses. Matthew is currently employed as the Operations Support Manager in the Corporation's Drinking Water Quality Branch.

Iain Fairbairn
Iain has over 20 years’ experience in the water industry. Over this time, he has worked in many different roles as an Operator, Plant Manager, Strategic Planner, Product Manager and Program Director. He is currently leading the Sydney Water contribution to a regulatory project being run by the NSW EPA to construct a new regulatory framework for nutrients that are discharged from WWTPs across the Hawkesbury-Nepean River catchment. Iain is also exploring new ways to tackle nutrient pollution through green offset projects that will compliment Sydney Water’s continued investment in wastewater treatment plant upgrades. Iain is a past co-chair of the Operations Specialist Network.

Richard Scott
Richard Scott is the Water Quality and Environment Water Industry Training Manager within SA Water, responsible for water quality and environmental awareness training within SA Water and its alliance partners. He has worked in the South Australian and NSW water industry for 33 years with experience in public health regulation and compliance, environmental regulation, operations, commissioning, construction management and training.   He is a member of the AWA Operations Specialist Network Committee; Government Skills Australia Sustainability Resources Advisory Committee; and TAFESA Water Industry Quality Assurance Group and National Industry Reference Group for  RPL and Training and Assessment Resources in the Water Industry. He is currently identifying gaps in water industry training in South Australia and focusing on certification of water industry operation staff.  

Cheryl Marvell
Cheryl is the Treatment Manager - Northern Region for Sydney Water. She manages nine wastewater treatment plants in Sydney’s northern suburbs including North Head WWTP and the Rouse Hill Water Recycling Plant. She has been a passionate supporter of the water operations business since entering the sector some 20 years ago. She facilitates the Engineers and Operators Conference in NSW, which is in its 15th year. She is currently the AWA NSW Branch Immediate Past President and a founding member of the AWA Operations Specialist Network.

Tony O’Neill
Tony oversees the overall management, delivery, and technical assistance related to operations delivery and readiness of industrial treatment plants, water and wastewater projects, and treatment plant startups for CH2MHILL’s operations group in Australia and New Zealand. Tony has worked in a number of operational roles for the past 30 years (Operations to Operations Management) and primarily most of this has been hands-on in water and wastewater utilities and projects working in countries such as New Zealand, Australia, Singapore, Mongolia, United Kingdom and the United States. Tony has also spent considerable time working in EPC and DBO delivery projects primarily focused on O&M, operational readiness and O&M integration along with specializing in operational optimisation for existing operations. Tony has been involved with AWA since arriving in Australia in 2007 after a six year stint working on large water projects in the USA and this is Tony’s second term on the National Operations Committee. Over the years Tony has been mentored by some experienced and dedicated operations experts and being part of the Operations committee allows Tony to give something back to the water industry especially in regards to nurturing our future Operations ambassadors.

Sally Rewell
Sally is a Chemical Engineer with three years’ experience in the water industry. She currently works as a Production Officer at Rouse Hill Water Recycling Plant with Sydney Water. At Rouse Hill WRP, Sally is responsible for project managing and commissioning chemical dosing unit upgrades and plant optimisations, and was also recently elected as Chair of the Treatment Safety Committee. Sally has won numerous corporate awards for work at Sydney Water, and in May 2012 represented Sydney Water on a Water Sensitive Cities Study Tour of Northern Europe. Sally currently sits on the NSW Branch, the National Operations Specialist Network and the Young Water Professionals. She is immediate past Chair of the NSW YWP committee having held the position for two years. Sally is the winner of the AWA NSW Young Water Professional of the Year Award for 2012.
